Gresham

While the city has grown considerably over the past decades, it has managed to retain its community spirit and small-town charm. Residents take time to shop at the Gresham Farmers Market, play at Gresham City Park, shop in Historic Downtown Gresham and swim at the Mount Hood Aquatic Center. The Farmers Market is open May thru October and offers an array of fresh produce and flowers to enjoy. Gresham City Park features basketball courts, a playground and picnic areas. Numerous gift and specialty shops line the streets of Historic Downtown Gresham. Mount Hood Aquatic Center is located at Mount Hood Community College and is home to an Olympic size pool, saunas and hot tubs.

Gresham features a progressive business climate, an unparalleled environment and is a place for responsible development. Aside from being a place for business, Gresham also offers a great quality of life.

Residents have access to an excellent education system with five collaborative school districts serving kindergarten through 12th grade. The districts offer a unique program called School-to-Work that is a bridge between classroom learning and work-based learning. Through career awareness, career exploration, and career preparedness opportunities, students learn first-hand about the world of work. Mount Hood Community College provides an excellent foundation for those seeking to move on to a four-year university.

When it's time to play, few places compare with Gresham. Golfing, athletic fields of all types, deep woods for hiking and biking, steelhead fishing, internationally famous wind surfing in the Gorge, snow skiing 12 months a year and the most spectacular mountain, river and wilderness scenery make Gresham a hot year-round ticket.

A trip to Mt. Hood and the Mt. Hood National Forest provides additional recreational opportunities including the chance to climb to the summit of Oregon's tallest glacial peak at 11,235 feet elevation. In the summer, there’s hiking, camping, biking and fishing. In the winter, cross-country skiers, downhill racers and snowmobilers head for the area.

The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area offer spectacular views, long hiking trails that pass by numerous beautiful waterfalls, windsurfing, the Bonneville Dam, lodging facilities, restaurants and many other amenities.

Most people settled in Gresham between 1852 and1853. Most of the families that came to Gresham were known to flock to the west, but did so slowly. They made several stops along the way, coming from as far as the Carolinas. Gresham began as a crossroads village with only four public buildings. In 1884 the city received a post office and was given a name. The city was without a mayor and a town council for twenty years after. The first mayor was elected in 1904 and on February 11, 1905, the village was incorporated by the Oregon State Legislature and filed with the Secretary of State as the "Town of Gresham." In 1921, the name was officially changed to the "City of Gresham".

Today, Gresham is a flourishing city. Like the city’s motto says: “A Great Place To Work And Play."
